BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- Reigning Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo said Wednesday that he and his team are eager to win in the upcoming World Athletics Diamond League events and World Athletics Relays in China.
The first two stops of the 2025 Diamond League will take place in Xiamen, China, on April 26 and in Shanghai on May 3. The World Athletics Relays will follow on May 10-11 in Guangzhou.
"I am happy and excited to see what the atmosphere will be like in China. The team is hungry-they want to start their unbeaten run for gold in the 4x400m, and now the 4x100m is also coming up, which is great for Botswana," said the 21-year-old, who won his country's first-ever Olympic gold by claiming the men's 200m title in Paris 2024 with a time of 19.46 seconds.
Botswana's men's 4x400m relay team is the defending world champion, having won gold at the 2024 World Athletics Relays in the Bahamas before capping its season with an Olympic silver medal.
Tebogo also expressed pride in Botswana hosting the 2026 World Athletics Relays. "This will be the first time Botswana hosts a senior world event in any sport and the first time the World Athletics Relays will be held in Africa. I believe the Botswana Athletics Association will study how other countries organize it and do their best to meet expectations."
In addition to his competitive ambitions, Tebogo was named an ambassador for World Athletics' Kids' Athletics program, a global initiative aimed at inspiring children to be more active. This year's theme, "Relay Around the World," was inspired by the upcoming World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou. Enditem
