CHICAGO, April 2 (Xinhua) -- A Democratic candidate won a pivotal seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court during an election night on Tuesday in Madison, capital of the U.S. Midwestern state of Wisconsin.

It is a blow to U.S. President Donald Trump and the Republican Party he leads, local media reported on Wednesday.

Democrat-supported Susan Crawford readily beat Brad Schimel, a Republican loyal to Trump and supported by billionaire Elon Musk, who had poured millions of dollars into the Wisconsin race.

Democrats and Republicans have called the race one of the most consequential elections. With an unusually high turnout, the critical race has been regarded as a referendum for the first time on the Trump administration's policies and agenda as well as on Musk's unprecedented shakeup of the federal government.

With spending exceeding 90 million U.S. dollars, the race has become the most expensive state Supreme Court race in U.S. history, breaking the previous record of 51 million dollars in 2023, local media reported, quoting a tally of the Brennan Center for Justice. Enditem
