TOKYO, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock index briefly fell more than 4 percent on Thursday morning to an eight-month low amid concerns over the Japanese economy after the U.S. unveiled a reciprocal tariff of 24 percent on the country.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average at one point dropped around 1,600 points, or 4.5 percent, plummeting to around 34,100, the lowest intraday level since August, as shares were sold across the board after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent baseline tariff on all countries and slapped the harsher-than-expected rate on Japan, analysts said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar weakened sharply to the upper 147 yen zone in Tokyo as the yen was bought after Trump's announcement of the reciprocal tariffs. Enditem
