COLOMBO, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed a committee to conduct an in-depth study on potential issues that may arise due to a new tariff system introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump, the President's Media Division (PMD) said on Thursday.
The committee will submit recommendations to the government, the PMD said in a statement.
The committee includes the secretary to the Ministry of Finance, the governor of the Central Bank, the chairman of the Board of Investment, the chairman of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the director general of economic affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the senior economic advisor to the president, the PMD said.
The United States is an important export market for Sri Lanka, especially apparels. In 2024, Sri Lanka's exports to the U.S. were about 3 billion U.S. dollars.
Trump announced on Wednesday that he is imposing the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" on trading partners, and Sri Lanka now faces a 44-percent tariff. Enditem
