VIENTIANE, April 3 (Xinhua) -- Lao Deputy Prime Minister Saleumxay Kommasith presided over a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday for a coal-fired power plant project in southern Laos' Sekong province, which will have a total capacity of 1,800 megawatts across six 300-megawatt plants.
The electricity generated will be exported to Cambodia under a power purchase agreement with the state-owned electricity company in Cambodia, the Ministry of Energy and Mines said on Thursday.
The 4-billion-U.S.-dollar project was expected to start operation in January 2028. All six plants were planned to be operational by January 2030, with a 30-year concession period from 2030 to 2060.
In addition to the project, a 500-kilovolt transmission line spanning 253 kilometers will connect the facility to the Laos-Cambodia border. The project is expected to boost Laos' energy export capacity and strengthen economic ties with Cambodia. Enditem
