SARAJEVO, April 3 (Xinhua) -- The United States has imposed sweeping tariffs on imports worldwide, with Bosnia and Herzegovina(BiH) facing tariffs of up to 36 percent on all exports to the US, a move expected to impact the country's trade, particularly its defense industry.
According to the Foreign Trade Chamber of BiH, in 2024, BiH exports to the U.S. totaled 234.5 million KM (132.3 million U.S. dollars), with the defense industry making up more than 60 percent of exports, followed by the metal, electrical, chemical, food, and wood industries.
While BiH's overall trade exposure to the U.S. remains limited, the increased tariffs will directly affect military equipment exports, previously subject to a 12 percent tariff. Indirectly, the impact could extend to BiH companies supplying the European Union, as higher costs may reduce demand for their products.
The metal and automotive industries could face production pressures, rising costs, and employment challenges. Experts warn of potential disruptions in supply chains and inflationary risks.
Trade restrictions are expected to weigh on economic activity and raise concerns about broader financial stability, the chamber said. Enditem
