JAKARTA, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Ten people, occupants of two cars, were killed after landslides hit and buried the vehicles in Indonesia's East Java province, a top rescuer said on Friday.
The incident occurred when the two cars were passing the Pacet-Cangar route in Mojokerto Regency on Thursday, said Nanang Sigit, head of the provincial search and rescue office.
"Suddenly, landslides occurred at a side of the route, hitting the two cars and pushing them into a ravine," he told Xinhua.
"One of the cars was found at a depth of about 75 meters and another at a depth of about 50 meters. Both cars were buried under three meters of soil," Sigit said.
"We have evacuated ten bodies from the two cars. The bodies were taken to a hospital in Batu town and nearby hospitals," he disclosed.
Sigit said that extreme weather conditions had occurred during and before the incident.
"Strong winds and heavy rains had occurred days before and during the landslides," he added, noting that the ground conditions at the scene were unstable. Enditem
