MADRID, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Athletic Bilbao confirmed on Friday that veteran left-back Yuri Berchiche has signed a new contract until the end of June 2026.
The 35-year-old has seen his deal automatically extended for another year after playing a stipulated number of games in his current contract, which is due to expire at the end of the current season.
The defender has played 36 games across all competitions this season, scoring one goal, which came at home to Roma in the last-16 of the UEFA Europa League.
He has so far made 231 appearances for Athletic since returning to the club from Paris Saint-Germain in 2018 for around 24 million euros.
Yuri began his career in the Athletic youth system, but after leaving as a junior he had an itinerant career that saw him join Tottenham Hotspur, who sent him on loan with Cheltenham Town and Valladolid.
Returning to Spain, he played for Real Union and Eibar, before becoming established with Real Sociedad, which he left to join PSG in a big money move in 2017.
"The continued performance of Yuri Berchiche this season, both in terms of quality and quantity, is a guarantee. He gives us energy, experience, effort and a capacity to play, as well as being reliable in defense," commented Athletic's Director of Sport, Mikel Gonzalez, in an announcement on the club website.
