JAKARTA, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Mount Dukono, located in Indonesia's North Maluku province, erupted on Sunday, prompting an aviation warning and safety recommendations, according to the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center.
The eruption, which occurred at 6:11 p.m. local time in North Halmahera regency, sent a column of ash 3,300 meters into the sky.
White clouds with moderate to thick intensity drifted northward from the crater.
To mitigate the eruption's impact on air travel, a Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation has been issued at the orange level, the second-highest alert, prohibiting aircraft from flying below 5,000 meters in the volcano's vicinity. Pilots are also advised to stay alert for volcanic ash, which can disrupt flights.
Communities living on the slopes of the volcano, as well as visitors and tourists, are advised to avoid all activities within a four-km radius of the crater.
People in nearby areas are also advised to keep face masks or coverings ready to protect their respiratory systems from potential ash exposure.
Standing at 1,335 meters tall, Mt. Dukono is one of Indonesia's 127 active volcanoes. Enditem
