KABUL, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan interim government's Ministry of Public Health marked World Health Day on Monday, which falls on April 7 every year.
The event, held at the Ministry of Public Health, was organized under the theme "Caring for mothers and newborns is an investment for a healthier future." Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) attended the ceremony.
"The Islamic Emirate demonstrates its commitment to the health of all Afghans by providing comprehensive services that are equitable, high-quality, and non-discriminatory," said Mawlawi Abdul Wali Haqqani, deputy minister for health services.
Haqqani emphasized that the ministry is working to expand healthcare access in rural and remote areas, with plans to build new health centers and enhance the availability of quality medical services across the country.
According to the Ministry of Public Health, significant progress has been made in recent years, particularly in the implementation of the national vaccination program, which has reached many remote regions to safeguard children's health.
However, officials acknowledged that the decades of war in Afghanistan have damaged the country's health system and thousands of Afghans still travel abroad annually for treatment.
According to a statement from a UN statement issued in February, the U.S. funding cuts have led to the suspension of hundreds of mobile health teams and essential healthcare services, affecting 9 million people across Afghanistan. Enditem
