LONDON, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The British government on Monday pledged 600 million pounds (about 766 million U.S. dollars) to help improve researchers' access to health data.

The new Health Data Research Service, jointly funded by the British government and Wellcome Trust, will transform access to health data and "slash red tape" for researchers.

It will also help accelerate the discovery of life-saving drugs and improve patient care.

"That is not just good for patients and their families. It means growth that puts more money in working people's pockets with more, better paid jobs," said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Last month, Starmer announced plans to abolish the National Health Service (NHS) England, part of the government's efforts to enhance efficiency.

NHS England is a non-departmental body offering public healthcare in England, which means it is independent of government departments but delivers public services using public funding. Enditem
