WELLINGTON, April 8 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's industry and household greenhouse gas emissions decreased 2 percent in the December 2024 quarter, according to the statistics department Stats NZ on Tuesday.
The decline was mainly due to a 45-percent drop in emissions from electricity, gas, water, and waste services during the quarter, Stats NZ said.
Significant reductions in fossil fuel use for electricity generation during the quarter led to an overall decline in carbon dioxide emissions from industry, Stats NZ environment statistics spokesperson Tehseen Islam said.
The decrease was partly counterbalanced by a rise in emissions from the manufacturing and transport, postal, and warehousing sectors, both of which experienced GDP growth during the quarter, Islam said.
Excluding households, industry emissions dropped 2.2 percent, reaching the lowest level since records began. By comparison, gross domestic product rose 0.7 percent, he said, adding seasonally adjusted household emissions increased 0.2 percent in 2024's last quarter.
"Household emissions have now exceeded manufacturing emissions for four consecutive quarters," Islam said. Enditem
