KABUL, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The counter-narcotics police have destroyed 36 acres of poppy farms in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province over the past week, provincial police spokesman Assadullah Jamshid said Tuesday.

The anti-drug campaign had covered Daman, Panjwai, Khakriz, Maiwand and other parts of Kandahar province, during which police smashed the poppy farm in 36 acres of land and arrested five persons for investigation, the official added.

Police won't allow anyone to cultivate poppy and other illegal crops used in producing illicit drugs in the province, Jamshid asserted.

In the drive against illicit drugs, police arrested six alleged drug smugglers and discovered some hashish and other illegal objects in their possession in the eastern Nangarhar province a couple of days ago.

The Afghan interim government has vowed to fight against illicit drugs until the once poppy-growing country becomes a drug-free nation. Enditem
