COLOMBO, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government has approved a proposal to recruit 18,853 graduates and young people to fill vacancies in selected government institutions, said a spokesman on Tuesday.
Cabinet spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa told the media that the government has allocated 10 billion rupees (34 million U.S. dollars) from the 2025 budget to fill the most critical vacancies across various sectors.
The positions will be filled based on merit, and the selected government institutions have been instructed to call for applications accordingly.
This move follows earlier decisions by the cabinet to approve the recruitment of 5,882 new employees in March and nearly 7,500 in February.
Government hiring had been frozen following Sri Lanka's 2022 economic crisis, which left many public sector positions vacant. The government is now focusing on filling essential roles as part of its recovery efforts. Enditem
