KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 (Xinhua) -- The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), a mega rail project in Malaysia being built by the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), has completed 38 of 41 tunnel breakthroughs ahead of schedule, keeping the key infrastructure project on track.

The ECRL completed the 3.5-km "Serendah 1 Tunnel" on Monday, two months ahead of schedule, the CCCC and Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

MRL Chief Executive Officer Darwis Abdul Razak said the smooth excavation works were attributed to the outstanding effort and commitment of the ECRL project team, as well as the adoption of advanced tunnelling techniques and safe construction practices.

The ECRL extends from Malaysia's largest transport hub, Port Klang, and runs across the peninsula to the northeastern Kelantan state. The railway is expected to greatly enhance connectivity and bring more balanced growth to the country, by linking its less-developed region on the east coast to the economic heartland on the west coast.
