ISTANBUL, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye's domestically developed Anka III unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) successfully completed a live-fire test on Tuesday by deploying a jet-powered explosive target aircraft, Turkish defense authorities said.
The Anka III, produced by state-owned Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS), released the "Super Lightning" target drone from its wing during the trial, Defense Industry Agency head Haluk Gorgun said in a post on social media platform X.
According to TUSAS, the Super Lightning, equipped with a jet engine and explosives, is designed to autonomously activate its wings after release, locate targets, and detonate upon impact.
"These high-altitude, high-speed systems underscore the advanced engineering capabilities Türkiye's defense sector has achieved in unmanned technologies," Gorgun said.
TUSAS stated on its website that the Anka III features stealth capabilities, high-speed performance, and a significant internal payload capacity. The drone has a maximum takeoff weight of 7 tonnes, can operate at around 12,000 meters, reach speeds of 0.7 Mach, and remain airborne for 10 hours.
The Anka III, first flown in December 2023, is part of Türkiye's push to expand its indigenous defense technologies. Enditem
