ZLATIBOR, Serbia, April 8 (Xinhua) -- European School Sport Federation president Zeljko Tanaskovic was elected the new president of the International School Sport Federation (ISF) at the ISF General Assembly here on Tuesday.

Tanaskovic defeated Saqer Al Khalifa, president of the Bahrain Schools and Collegiate Athletics Association, with almost two-thirds of the 83 votes to take over from former president Laurent Petrynka, who resigned last October.

Tanaskovic's presidency runs until 2026, when the ISF General Assembly will again elect a new leader.

The Serbian, who led a support committee to provide assistance after Petrynka's resignation, was captain of the former Yugoslavia's national volleyball team, which took a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games.

"We have to give opportunity to all children. Only school teams participate in school competitions. We've lost our mission in many competitions," Tanaskovic said in his presentation.

Tanaskovic noted that the Serbian government had promised 2.5 million euros over the next 10 years to financially support the ISF, and will open an ISF Branch Office in the capital Belgrade.

"We have already had an agreement from the Serbian government to open a working office in Serbia. I think that is big help for us and I really believe that with this money we can make some solidarity programs," Tanaskovic added. Enditem
