CAIRO, April 9 (Xinhua) -- A ministerial conference of the Khartoum Process kicked off on Wednesday in Cairo, aiming at combating migrant smuggling and human trafficking.

Established in 2014, the Khartoum Process is a platform for political cooperation amongst the countries along the migration route between the Horn of Africa and Europe.

Egypt has presided over the Khartoum Process since April 2024 to coordinate international efforts and address migration issues.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said the event constitutes a unique platform for political cooperation to achieve concrete outcomes via dialogue, exchanging knowledge, and providing support in essential migration fields, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Representatives from 50 countries in Europe, the Horn of Africa, and regional and international organizations took part in the event, the statement added.

Abdelatty said in the opening speech that Egypt sought via its presidency of the event to push "this platform's work to expand aspect of cooperation."

Cooperation among countries in this field should tackle its main causes while considering the principle of burden and responsibility sharing to strengthen the resilience of communities hosting migrants, he said. Enditem
