VALLETTA, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Malta's trade with the United States saw a sevenfold decrease in the first two months of 2025 when compared to the same period last year, according to national statistics published on Wednesday.
Figures published by the National Statistics Office show that Malta exported just 23 million euros (25.5 million U.S. dollars) worth of goods to the U.S. in January and February 2025.
In the same two months last year, Malta had exported over 151 million euros worth of goods -- almost seven times as much.
Imports slumped too, dropping from 40.4 million euros in January and February last year to 16.5 million euros in the first two months this year.
Throughout all last year, Malta exported 272.5 million euros worth of goods and imported 342 million euros worth of goods to and from the U.S.
The future of trade with the U.S. hangs in the balance following the introduction of tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump, which came into effect on Wednesday. They include a 20 percent tariff on imports from the European Union, including Malta. (1 euro = 1.11 U.S. dollar) Enditem
