NEW DELHI, April 9 (Xinhua) -- A Naxal commander was killed in an overnight gunfight with government forces in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, the police said Wednesday.

The gunfight broke out between Naxals and joint contingents of police inside Kalothar forest under Katoria police station limits in Banka district, about 250 km southeast of Patna, the capital city of Bihar.

According to the police, the gunfight was triggered during a search operation carried out on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of Naxals in the forest area.

"One Naxal commander identified as Ramesh Tudu alias Tedua was killed in a gunfight with police. The deceased carried a cash reward of 100,000 rupees on his head," a police official said. "He was active in Bihar and the adjoining Jharkhand."

Reports said other Naxals accompanying Tedua managed to escape into the forest, taking advantage of the area's topography and darkness.

Last month, Naxals received a major blow in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh as they lost over 45 of their cadres in gunfights with government forces.

India's federal government has resolved to eradicate Naxalism before March 31, 2026. Enditem
