MAPUTO, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Mozambique's Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levi said on Wednesday that the post-election demonstrations that gripped the country for nearly three months resulted in an economic loss of over 510 million U.S. dollars and the destruction of over 950 establishments.
Speaking before the Assembly of the Republic in Maputo during the government's briefing to parliamentarians, Levi detailed the economic and social toll of the unrest, which followed the country's 2024 general elections.
"During the violent demonstrations, more than 955 economic and social establishments were destroyed, leading to the unemployment of around 55,000 people, a number that may still increase," she said.
Levi emphasized that the disruptions not only led to property and infrastructure damage but also triggered a severe economic downturn in the final quarter of 2024.
"Due to the violent post-electoral demonstrations, our economy registered a contraction of minus 4.87 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024, reversing the growth trend of previous quarters, which stood at 3.2 percent, 4.5 percent, and 3.68 percent, respectively," the prime minister noted.
She further added that restrictions on the movement of people and goods during the unrest contributed heavily to the economic slump and overall instability in the country. Enditem
