ADDIS ABABA, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The Ethiopian government has announced the appointment of Tadesse Werede as the interim president of the Tigray region, replacing Getachew Reda, the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation reported Tuesday.
Werede, who has served as the deputy president of the Tigray interim administration for the last two years, officially assumed the presidency Tuesday in a ceremony held in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.
"Today marks the peaceful and formal implementation of a leadership transition program, an important step toward ushering in a new political culture," Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was quoted as saying.
"It is my hope that Werede will seize this historic opportunity to help the people of Tigray realize their aspirations for peace and development, and in doing so, Werede will contribute meaningfully to Ethiopia and Africa as a whole," Abiy said.
During the event, Werede signed a document outlining eight key responsibilities that the Tigray interim administration would be executing in the next two years under his leadership.
The handover ceremony took place in the presence of several dignitaries, including the newly elected chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, ambassadors from various countries, and representatives of international organizations based in Addis Ababa.
A peace deal, known as the Pretoria Agreement, was signed on Nov. 2, 2022, to end a bloody conflict between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front. The agreement led to the formation of an interim administration, which is tasked with governing the Tigray region until elections are held. Enditem
