JAKARTA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has cautioned that the United States' latest unilateral tariff strategy risks global economic stability and disrupts international supply chains.

During a special meeting held via video conference on Thursday, the ASEAN economic ministers expressed deep concern over the tariffs' impact on businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as well as global trade dynamics.

"The unprecedented imposition of tariffs by the U.S. will disrupt regional and global trade and investment flows, as well as supply chains, affecting businesses and consumers worldwide, including those of the U.S.," stated the ASEAN Economic Ministers' joint statement.

While opposing retaliatory actions, ASEAN reiterated its commitment to engaging in an open and constructive dialogue with the U.S. government to find a balanced and sustainable trade solution.

The ministers also expressed their support for a fair, rules-based multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization as a major pillar, and they advocated for the WTO to be used as a venue for resolving trade disputes.

Despite these global concerns, ASEAN remains committed to strengthening regional economic integration, extending cooperation with external partners, and jointly and sustainably ensuring regional trade stability, said the statement. Enditem
