COLOMBO, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan government will issue a gazette notification in May to recruit 2,500 police officers immediately, a minister said on Thursday.
Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala told parliament that the cabinet has approved the immediate recruitment drive, marking the first step toward filling existing vacancies in the police service.
According to Wijepala, the number of recruits was determined based on the capacity of the country's police training academies.
He also noted that the government was working to streamline the police transfer process and was taking significant steps to expand medical coverage for officers.
Earlier, the government announced plans to recruit a total of 10,000 new police officers to bolster efforts aimed at reducing road accidents and conducting anti-crime and anti-drug operations.
In January, police spokesman K.B. Manathunga said the current police force stands at around 75,000, an insufficient number to effectively implement the government's new initiatives. Enditem
