ABU DHABI, April 10 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has successfully mediated a prisoner exchange between the United States and Russia, involving the release of one citizen from each country, UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.

The exchange took place in Abu Dhabi and was attended by representatives from relevant authorities of both nations, according to the ministry.

The two individuals involved in the exchange are Ksenia Karelina, a U.S.-Russian dual national who was arrested in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg in early 2024 and convicted of treason by a Russian court for donating money to a charity providing humanitarian support to Ukraine, and Arthur Petrov, a dual German-Russian citizen who was arrested in Cyprus in August 2023 at the request of the U.S. for allegedly exporting sensitive microelectronic devices to Russia, according to media reports.

In a statement, the UAE's ministry expressed gratitude to both the U.S. and Russian governments for placing their trust in the UAE and for selecting Abu Dhabi as the venue for the exchange, which it said highlighted the UAE's strong friendship with both nations. Enditem
