TUNIS, April 10 (Xinhua) -- Violent clashes have erupted between two groups of undocumented migrants in Tunisia's southeastern province of Sfax, resulting in one death and multiple injuries, Tunisian National Radio reported Thursday.
The violence broke out Wednesday morning in the El Amra area, involving two migrant camps composed of nationals from Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea, respectively, parliament member Tarek El Mahdi told radio program Studio Wataniya.
El Mahdi said the conflict stemmed from a dispute over a football match but quickly escalated into clashes involving knives, leading to the death of a Guinean national.
According to Tunisian authorities, approximately 20,000 undocumented migrants are currently concentrated in the El Amra and Jebniana areas of Sfax, a primary departure point for people attempting perilous sea crossings to Italy.
Situated in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia faces pressure as a major transit point for migrants and refugees from Africa and the Middle East seeking to reach Europe, often embarking on dangerous boat journeys towards the Italian island of Lampedusa. Enditem
