LUSAKA, April 10 (Xinhua) -- A conference aimed at tackling challenges in the transport and logistics sector opened here Thursday with Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema calling for more investment in infrastructure development in Africa.

Addressing the fourth Land-Linked Zambia Conference, the Zambian president said improving transport corridors will boost intra-Africa trade, which remains low due to persistent issues such as inadequate transport systems.

According to Hichilema, it is important to invest in non-stop border posts to facilitate the flow of trade and business in order to facilitate intra-Africa trade.

He said joint investment in infrastructure by African nations would yield better results than isolated efforts.

Hichilema also called on the private sector to work with governments to support infrastructure development as part of efforts to lower the cost of conducting business.

Zambian Minister of Transport and Logistics Frank Tayali stressed the significance of tackling transport costs, saying Zambia is taking its geographical position by investing in transport infrastructure in order to improve connectivity with neighboring countries.

Under the theme "Embracing Smart Transport Corridors in Africa," the conference, scheduled for Thursday and Friday, attracted 12 ministers from the southern African region as well as key stakeholders in the sector.

The conference will, among other things, discuss transport corridors, road and rail linkages, trade and the impact of the transport sector on the continent. Enditem
