SYDNEY, April 11 (Xinhua) -- The upcoming winter will be one of the warmest on record, Australia's Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has forecast.
According to an updated long-range forecast published by the BoM recently, above-average maximum temperatures are very likely for the vast majority of Australia between May and July.
The BoM was predicting that above average minimum temperatures were likely or very likely across all of Australia in the same period.
"There's an increased chance of particularly warm days, particularly in the south," a bureau spokesperson said.
"There's an increased chance of warmer nights, especially across parts of the west and in the south."
Australia's winter spans from the start of June through to the end of August. The country recorded its two warmest winters on record in 2023 and 2024, with mean temperatures 1.54 degrees Celsius above a baseline 1961-1990 average in 2023 and 1.49 degrees Celsius above the average in 2024.
The BoM said earlier in April that March 2025 was the warmest March in Australia since records began in 1910, with mean temperature 2.41 degrees Celsius above the average, beating the previous record of 2.03 degrees Celsius above the average set in 2019.
While parts of Australia's east and northeast were hit by widespread flooding and damaging cyclones in March, the BoM said that rainfall along the country's south coast since February 2024 had been in the lowest five percent on record.
"For some, it has been the driest 14 months on record," the spokesperson said.
The long-range forecast said that May to July rainfall is likely to be within the typical range for most of Australia. Enditem
