COLOMBO, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka has launched a long-anticipated online traffic fine payment system through the GovPay app, now operational in 11 police stations across Kurunegala, Dambulla, and Anuradhapura districts, an official said on Friday.
Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake announced at a press conference that drivers can now pay fines online and collect their license directly from the police officer at the spot.
The minister described the rollout as another milestone in the government's broader digitalization agenda.
The initiative is currently being implemented as a pilot project, which will run through April 30. Following an evaluation, it will be expanded to police stations nationwide.
GovPay is an online platform designed to facilitate digital payments for a wide range of government services.
In addition, Harsha Purasinghe, a board member of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), said that in the coming weeks, the police will begin issuing informational leaflets alongside traffic tickets, which will guide drivers on how to pay their fines using the GovPay app. Enditem
