DAR ES SALAAM, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's opposition leader Tundu Lissu has been charged with treason and dissemination of false information ahead of the 2025 general elections.

Lissu, chairman of the leading opposition party Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), appeared in the Kisutu Resident Magistrate's Court in the port city of Dar es Salaam on Thursday.

He was remanded in custody until April 24, when his case will come up for another mention.

Lissu was arrested by police on Wednesday in Mbinga district in the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania, shortly after addressing a public rally. He was transported overnight to Dar es Salaam.

CHADEMA leaders have been addressing public rallies under its slogan launched late last year, "No Reforms, No Election," which calls for major changes to the country's electoral system.

Calling for reforms to the Electoral Commission, Lissu said that public servants appointed by the president should not be members of the body.

He also urged a proper candidate registration process to prevent arbitrary disqualifications. Enditem
