BERLIN, April 11 (Xinhua) -- RB Leipzig returned to winning ways on the road with a nervy 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg on Friday night, nearly surrendering a three-goal lead in a dramatic second half at the curtain raiser of the 29th round on Friday.

The visitors got off to a flying start at the Volkswagen Arena, with Lois Openda capitalizing on a defensive error to open the scoring with a low shot from 23 meters in the 11th minute.

Leipzig continued to control proceedings and doubled its advantage in the 26th minute when Xavi Simons curled a shot into the far corner after a turnover near the edge of the box.

Wolfsburg struggled to cope with Leipzig's pressure and intensity, and Jakub Kaminski came closest for the home side with a shot that struck the crossbar. Meanwhile, Leipzig wasted chances to double its lead before halftime and went into the break with a deserved 2-0 lead.

Xavi struck again soon after the restart with a long-range strike to make it 3-0. But rather than resting on its laurels, Leipzig took its foot off the gas and Wolfsburg took full advantage.

Kilian Fischer pulled one back in the 58th minute with a curling effort, his first Bundesliga goal. The home side, now riding a wave of belief, created several chances, with Vaclav Cerny and Jonas Wind both testing goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi.

Wolfsburg made it 3-2 in the 75th minute when substitute Andreas Skov Olsen turned in Joakim Maehle's low cross to set up a nervy finish. Gerhardt's volley almost leveled the scores, but Gulacsi made a fine save to preserve the lead.

Despite the late pressure, Leipzig held on for its first away win since early December, picking up three vital points in its quest for European qualification.

"We dominated early on and made good use of our chances, but it is to Wolfsburg's credit that they fought back hard," said Leipzig interim coach Zsolt Low. "In the end, the result was close, but it was an important and deserved win."

"We lost and basically handed them two goals," said Wolfsburg captain Maximilian Arnold. "Then we concede right after halftime, but the team showed real character. In my opinion, we don't deserve to come away empty-handed. It's a tough one to take." Enditem
