NEW DELHI, April 12 (Xinhua) -- At least three Naxals were killed Saturday in a fierce gunfight in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, police said.

The gunfight between Naxals and joint contingents of police and paramilitary forces broke out in the Indravati region of Bijapur district, about 420 km south of Raipur, the capital city of Chhattisgarh.

"The identity of the slain Naxals is being ascertained," a senior police official said.

According to the police official, the government forces have not suffered any damage in the stand-off.

The police also claimed the recovery of a large quantity of arms and ammunition from the spot.

"A search operation is still going on in the area," the official added.

Last month, Naxals received a major blow in the state as they lost over 45 of their cadres in gunfights with government forces.

Reports said 138 Naxalites have been killed in Chhattisgarh since the beginning of this year. Enditem
