DAR ES SALAAM, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's major opposition party Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) was disqualified on Saturday from taking part in the 2025 general elections after it failed to sign the 2025 Electoral Code of Conduct, said an official.

Ramadhani Kailima, director of elections for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said that as per the Elections Act, any political party that fails to sign the code will be disqualified from the upcoming general elections as well as any subsequent by-elections within a five-year period.

Kailima said 18 registered political parties, including the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi, signed the code on Saturday in the capital of Dodoma.

CHADEMA Secretary General John Mnyika said in a statement that the opposition party could not sign the code after the INEC had failed to respond to its proposals.

According to Mnyika, CHADEMA wrote a letter to the INEC on Dec. 29, 2024, outlining its proposals and demands for essential electoral reforms.

"This silence reflects an absence of genuine commitment to inclusive and transparent dialogue on the electoral process," he said. Enditem
