SOFIA, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Bulgarian authorities have seized nearly 92 kilograms of hashish in the northwestern town of Vidin, near the Danube Bridge at the border with Romania, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said Monday.

According to the NCA, the illicit drug was discovered Thursday evening, hidden in the driver's cab of a semi-trailer truck transporting carbonated beverage concentrate from Ireland to Türkiye. The hashish was packed in 94 parcels.

The agency said this was the largest single-case seizure of hashish in Bulgaria in the past 12 years. The total estimated value of the confiscated drugs is 700,000 U.S. dollars.

The truck driver was arrested at the scene. An investigation into the case is ongoing.

The NCA said the inspection was part of its compensatory control measures following the abolition of border checks at the internal borders of the European Union, after Bulgaria's accession as a full member of the Schengen area. Enditem
