MOSCOW, April 14 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Defense Ministry said Monday that a strike on Ukraine's northeastern city of Sumy on Sunday targeted military command staff at a meeting, while Kiev previously noted civilian casualties.

The ministry said that Russian forces launched a strike with two Iskander-M ballistic missiles at the meeting location, killing more than 60 Ukrainian servicemen.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's State Service for Emergencies said earlier that the death toll from the missile attack reached 34, including two children, while 117 people were injured.

Sumy regional governor Volodymyr Artyukh said that most of the deaths occurred in a trolleybus that was hit by the strike. The attack also caused damage to the local university and nearby apartment buildings. Enditem
