CAPE TOWN, April 14 (Xinhua) -- South Africa, in its role as the presidency of the Group of 20 (G20), kicked off the second Development Working Group (DWG) meeting on Monday in Somerset West, Western Cape Province.

The three-day meeting, which will end on Wednesday, brings together delegates from G20 member states, invited countries and international organizations to deliberate on policies that foster inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.

According to South Africa's Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, the meeting will serve as a platform for in-depth discussions on key development challenges and cooperative solutions.

"In alignment with the theme of solidarity, equality, and sustainability, the discussions will focus on three high-level priorities; high-level principles on global public goods and global public investment; mobilizing financial resources and means of implementation; and building resilience through universal social protection floors," the department said.

The G20 is an international forum of both developing and developed countries, which seeks to find solutions to global economic and financial issues. Together, the G20 members represent around 85 percent of the global gross domestic product, over 75 percent of global trade and about two-thirds of the world population.

This week's discussions aim to promote more inclusive and sustainable international development frameworks, with particular emphasis on the needs and priorities of developing nations.

"The G20 DWG plays a pivotal role in shaping global development priorities, focusing on reducing inequalities, promoting sustainable growth and strengthening international partnerships," the department said.

South Africa assumed the G20 presidency on Dec. 1, 2024, with the term running until Nov. 30, 2025. Enditem
