DAR ES SALAAM, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's electoral watchdog said on Monday that 1,396,609 new voters will be registered during the second phase of the voter register update, set to run from May 1 to July 4 ahead of the October general elections.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Jacobs Mwambegele said that another 1,092,383 voters will have their registration information updated, while 148,624 voters will be disqualified due to ineligibility.

The second phase of voter registration and updating is slated to take place in three rounds.

During a news conference in the capital, Dodoma, Mwambegele revealed that the first round will involve 15 regions across Tanzania's mainland and Zanzibar, followed by 16 regions in the second round. The third round will focus on correctional facilities, targeting 130 centers in mainland prisons and 10 centers in Zanzibar's reformatory institutions.

According to Mwambegele, INEC has set 7,659 voter registration and updating centers in Tanzania mainland and 210 others in Zanzibar for the second-phase registration exercise. Citizens, aged 18 years and above during the general elections, are allowed to register.

In October, Tanzanians choose councilors, Members of Parliament, and the president during the general elections held after five years. Enditem
