MADRID, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares on Tuesday emphasized the need for diplomacy and dialogue over tariffs, following Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's recent visit to China.
Speaking on national broadcaster TVE, Albares stressed the importance of global engagement to tackle international challenges. "You can't be a global player and you can't hope to solve major global challenges without engaging with China," he said, noting that the visit resulted in new trade agreements with what he described as an "irreplaceable" market for Spanish companies.
Albares said Spain aims to maintain a "sovereign and coherent" foreign policy, open to dialogue with partners such as Washington, Beijing, Brussels, Latin America, and Africa. He specifically called for diplomatic solutions to tensions arising from U.S. tariffs on foreign goods.
"This is a time when the world, Spain, and Europe, needs diplomacy, because we need dialogue, negotiation, and to build bridges," he said.
In recent weeks, the additional tariffs imposed by the United States have raised broad concerns and caused severe damage to global markets. Major world economies, including the European Union, have voiced objections to such a move of unilateralism and protectionism. Enditem
