WARSAW, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Jota Gonzalez of Spain has been appointed as the head coach of the Poland men's handball team, the Polish Handball Association (ZRPR) announced on Tuesday.

In February, ZRPR parted ways with Marcin Lijewski due to unsatisfied results. Poland took the 25th position at the 2025 IHF Men's World Championship, which was seen as a huge disappointment.

"Jota Gonzalez is a coach with extensive experience in working with senior teams, but also with youth. We believe that he will bring new energy and new ideas to the team, as well as open doors for talented players and effectively introduce them to the national team", the president of ZRPR, Slawomir Szmal, said during a press conference on Tuesday.

The Spaniard, who currently leads the Portuguese side Benfica, signed a contract with Poland team until 2028. He said that he is happy and grateful for the opportunity.

"I have a great desire to work. I want to help improve the situation of Polish handball and I will do everything to make the fans feel proud of the team. Our first goal will be to qualify for the 2026 European Men's Handball Championship," the coach said. Enditem
