ABU DHABI, April 15 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday issued an urgent call for peace in Sudan, warning of what it described as one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.

Lana Nusseibeh, assistant minister for political affairs, condemned in the strongest terms the "atrocities" being committed in Sudan and stressed the need for accountability, according to a report by the Emirates News Agency.

The UAE expressed deep condemnation of recent attacks targeting civilians in Sudan's Darfur, particularly the recent assaults on Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps near El Fasher, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths.

Nusseibeh emphasized the need to immediately stop attacks on humanitarian workers and the indiscriminate shelling of schools, markets, and hospitals by all parties involved in the conflict.

She called for urgent steps to reach a ceasefire and launch a political process, urging all sides not to obstruct the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Her remarks came days after the International Court of Justice postponed its hearing on a case filed by Sudan's Armed Forces (SAF) against the UAE for allegedly violating the Genocide Convention by supporting Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied factions in Darfur.

Sudan has been embroiled in an armed conflict between the SAF and the RSF since April 15, 2023. Enditem
