VIENTIANE, April 17 (Xinhua) -- People from various ethnic groups gathered in northern Laos' Luang Prabang province on Thursday morning to witness the annual Lao New Year procession of the sacred Phra Bang Buddha image, offering their respects and participating in traditional water blessing.

Lao President Thongloun Sisoulith led the ceremony, accompanied by senior officials, monks, and local residents. In a grand procession featuring traditional music and dance, monks and ceremonial guards escorted the Buddha image through the city, the local Pasaxon newspaper reported on Thursday.

The procession was also attended by both domestic and international tourists. The ceremony will run until Sunday, marking the conclusion of the Lao New Year celebrations in the province.

This procession is a key spiritual and cultural event, honoring the ancient traditions of Luang Prabang while uniting communities in prayer and celebration.

Every year, authorities in Luang Prabang organize a ceremony to invite monks to worship the Phra Bang Buddha, seeking blessings for the village.

The ceremony also offers the public an opportunity to pay their respects and pray for good fortune during the new year celebrations. Enditem
