SYDNEY, April 19 (Xinhua) -- A search was underway after a police vehicle was rammed and shots were fired following the pursuit of a stolen car through Sydney's eastern suburbs early on Saturday morning.

The police began following the dark-coloured car along Old South Head Road, Rose Bay in the city's east, at about 4 a.m. local time, when a pursuit was initiated but terminated due to speed, the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) Police said.

The vehicle was seen stopped a short time later. As an officer approached it on foot, the vehicle was driven toward an officer, with a police firearm being discharged toward the vehicle, NSW Police said.

The police vehicle was rammed and the stolen vehicle was driven away. No police were injured.

At about 6:30 a.m. local time, the vehicle was located and has been preserved for forensic examination.

Inquiries were continuing into the identity of the driver, NSW Police said. Enditem
