Addressing the criticism of China's human rights conditions
contained in the US State Department's 2006 Human Rights Report,
China on Wednesday launched a broad-side on the report, voicing its
disapproval of the report's stance.
Responding to questions on the report which was issued Tuesday,
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang stated that the annual
US "once again ignored basic facts", and actively engaged in
senseless distortion of China's human rights situation.
Based on its Constitution's human rights provisions, all levels
of government in China have consistently aimed to spread democracy
and improve the judiciary system thus benefiting the development of
all Chinese citizens, Qin said.
He added that China's human rights record is nothing short of
remarkable, and that Chinese people enjoy full freedom and human
rights under the law.
"The US government has no right to vaunt itself as a human
rights watchdog, a view held by the majority of the international
community," Qin said.
The spokesman ended by calling on the US to "reflect on its own
human rights problems, and stop using human rights as a pretext to
interfere in other countries' affairs."
