Residents in the Olympic co-host cities are also marking the occasion in more informal ways.
In Beijing, people took photographs of the countdown clock in Tiananmen Square on Tuesday. And in the city of Qingdao, in eastern China's Shandong Province, where the Olympic sailing events will be held residents gathered to view their own clock as the countdown continues.
