Start early in the morning and take subway line 5 to the Tiantan Dongmen stop. The Temple of Heaven was built between 1409 and 1420 during the Ming Dynasty and used by emperors as a site for prayer. The temple has four major parts: The Round Alter, The Echo Wall, The Imperial Vault of Heaven and The Hall of Prayers for Good Harvest. Come before 9 to catch Beijing’s elderly population dancing or practicing Tai Chi, or simply to avoid the crowd.

Price: 34 yuan

Grab some a traditional Beijing breakfast near the temple. Fried dough (油饼) and soymilk (豆浆) are local favorites

Price: 5 yuan
