Second Hong Kong LegCo Members Elected

Election for the second Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) finished Monday. Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa gave his congratulations to new legislators.

"The Government will work closely with the Legislative Council and look forward to building up a good and constructive working relationship with all members," Tung said.

The second LegCo is composed of 60 members, who will begin their term on October 30. The term of the LegCo will be four years as from this year.

The first LegCo elections of the HKSAR was held on May 24, 1998. The term of the 60 members of the first LegCo ended on June 30 this year.

Tung said he will meet the lawmakers in groups over the next few weeks to exchange views on issues of concern to the community.

"This election has marked a further step forward in the implementation of constitutional reforms in Hong Kong in accordance with the Basic Law," Tung said.
