Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Thursday that cooperation between
China and the United States has been beneficial in many areas and
is in the fundamental interests of the two peoples.
Zhu made the remarks when meeting members of the US House of
Representatives Jim Turner and Spencer Bachus, and their wives.
Zhu detailed China's policy of "peaceful reunification, one country
and two systems" and the eight-point proposal made by Chinese
President Jiang Zemin for resolving the Taiwan issue.
He
urged the United States to honor the one-China policy and the
principles set out in the three
Sino-US joint communiques, so as not to send wrong signals to
the Taiwan authorities and to firmly support China's peaceful
reunification.
The US politicians said that China's policy on Taiwan is a very
good policy. Given that people side with justice and judge matters
on facts, they will admit that there is only one China and Taiwan
is an integral part of China.
They supported the US government adhering to the one-China policy,
advocated developing a robust Sino-US relationship and vowed to
continue their efforts for the steady growth of US-China ties.
The guests briefed Zhu on their China tour. The experience
convinced them that American and Chinese peoples can co-exist
peacefully and become good partners, they said.
During their tour, US-based United Parcel Service (UPS) donated
materials for the construction of two primary schools.
Zhu expressed appreciation for their care and support for education
in China's poor regions. Such a visit can promote mutual
understanding and friendship between the two peoples, so their
efforts are meaningful.
Zhu also briefed the guests on China's economic development.
