President Hu Calls for Fighting Terrorism
Adjust font size:

Chinese President Hu Jintao, at an anti-terrorism exercise in Beijing on Friday, called for a campaign against all forms of terrorism, so as to safeguard public safety and world peace.

Greater efforts in combating terrorism are important for China to make use of strategic opportunities, create a peaceful and stable environment, and better protect the fundamental interests of the people, he said.

The rising threat of terrorism had negatively affected world peace and development, Hu said, adding that China was facing a realistic threat of terrorism after a series of major attacks in the other parts of the world.

The Chinese government constantly opposed terrorism in all forms, and advocated international cooperation to fight the threat. He called the anti-terrorism exercise a show of the government's determination to oppose terrorism and safeguard world peace.

The drill, called "Great Wall 2003", was based on experience of terrorism attacks abroad.

The exercise focused on the authorities' emergency action and the mobilization of anti-terrorism forces.

Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice President Zeng Qinghong, and China's top security official Luo Gan also attended the exercise at a training base of the Chinese People's Armed Police.

The four leaders are members of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Political Bureau.

The leaders also visited an exhibition on anti-terrorism equipment.
