The 10th Chinese National Games closed in Nanjing on Sunday
after 12 days of competition.
Premier Wen
Jiabao presided over the closing ceremony at the Olympic Sports
Complex.
Host Jiangsu
Province topped the medal standings with 56 golds. Guangdong
was second with 46, and the Chinese Army was third with 44.
Six world records were broken and another six equaled. Five Asian
records were rewritten and another five leveled.
The 10th National Games, the largest that China has staged,
attracted 9,986 athletes who competed in 32 disciplines, including
all 28 summer Olympic sports. It was also the first time that the
host province was selected through a bidding process.
Some of the highlights of the Games included Shanghai's 22-year-old
Olympic hurdles champion Liu Xiang clocking 13.10 seconds to retain
his National Games title.
The Games, which ran from October 12 to 23, was held in 54 venues
throughout 13 cities across Jiangsu, one of China's fastest
developing regions.
The 11th National Games will be held in Shandong
Province, east China, in 2009.
