China and Senegal have resumed diplomatic ties at ambassadorial
level, the Foreign Ministry said in Beijing yesterday.
Foreign Minister Li
Zhaoxing and Senegalese State Minister of Foreign Affairs
Cheikh Tidiane Gadio signed a joint communiqué on the resumption of
diplomatic relations on behalf of their respective governments on
Tuesday morning.
According to the communiqué, the resumption of ties is in
accordance with the "interests and aspiration of the two
peoples."
They agreed to resend ambassadors to each other's countries and
enable the work of each other's embassies on an equal footing, the
communiqué said.
It also said the government supports the efforts made by the
Senegalese government to safeguard state sovereignty and develop
its economy.
The Senegalese government recognized that there is only one
China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of
China is the sole legitimate government representing the whole of
China and that Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese
territory.
The government expressed appreciation in the communiqué of the
above stance adopted by the Senegalese government.
After the signing ceremony, Li and Gadio held official talks
during which they exchanged views on bilateral ties and issues of
common interest.
Foreign Ministry sources quoted by Xinhua News Agency said
Premier Wen
Jiabao and State Councilor Tang
Jiaxuan also had meetings with Gadio on Tuesday.
